Categories are the top-level headings visitors see on the public homepage — think of them as the "sections" of your knowledge base (for example, one category per major topic, such as "AcityPlus Mobile App" or "AcityPlus Admin Portal").
Creating a category
- In the sidebar, click Categories under Content.
- Click the New Category button in the top-right corner of the page.
- Fill in:
- Name — required, up to 255 characters. This is what visitors see.
- Description — optional, a sentence or two shown under the category name on the homepage and category listing.
- Click Save Category.
A web-friendly version of the name (a "slug") is generated automatically for the category's public URL — you don't need to enter one yourself.
Hiding a category from the public site
Tick Hide from public site (internal use only) on the create or edit form to keep a category, and everything inside it, off the public site entirely — useful for internal documentation that shouldn't be visible to regular visitors. When hidden:
- The category disappears from the homepage, the Categories page, and site search.
- Every subcategory and article inside it disappears too, even ones not individually marked as hidden, and even if their Status is Published.
- Direct links to the category, its subcategories, or its articles all show a normal "not found" page to visitors.
- Nothing changes in the admin panel — you can still see, edit, and manage everything as normal. On the Articles list, a Published article that's invisible for this reason shows a small "Internal" tag next to its status so it's clear why.
You can hide just a specific subcategory instead, and leave the rest of the category public — see "Creating and Managing Subcategories".
Reordering categories
On the Categories list, each row has an Order box. Type a lower number to move a category earlier in the list (categories are shown in ascending order on the public homepage), then click elsewhere to save it — there's no separate save button for this.
Editing and deleting
Use the pencil icon in the Actions column to edit a category's name or description at any time.
Important: deleting a category also permanently deletes every subcategory inside it, and every article inside those subcategories. The confirmation dialog only asks whether you're sure you want to delete it — it does not list what will be removed. Before deleting a category that isn't empty, check what's inside first (open its subcategories on the Subcategories page), and make sure you really want to remove all of it.
